Answers to General Questions

Why bent-shaft stand up paddles?

We at Paddle Surf Warehouse highly recommend using a bent-shaft standup paddle while paddling in the surf, on long distance intense or leisurely paddle sessions. Almost every stand-up paddle surfer prefers it. We offer many different paddles and they can all be customized to fit every body type.

Why is the blade angled?

There are many reasons why the blade on a stand up paddle is angled. The main reason is with the blade angled forward from the shaft the front part of the stroke is more-effective thus making the stroke longer. The longer the stroke the more efficient the stroke is. Another reason is that it prevents lifting water at stroke's end which expends less energy making it easier to go through the water. Bent Shaft paddles deliver more of your effort to the water. You'll go farther, faster, and with less effort.
A straight-shaft paddle wastes effort lifting water at the end of the stroke; an angled paddle does not.

What muscles does SUP Surfing or Paddle surfing work?

Stand up paddling provides an extremely unique and intense "core" workout. As everyone already knows your core is proven to be the most important area to condition and is the key to all sports. Paddling also is very effective for achieving full body workout by strengthening your quads, calf, hamstrings, ankles, and knees as the balancing effort works the small muscles in knees and ankles.
How do I get started paddling for the first time?

We at paddle surf warehouse highly recommend taking a lesson from a qualified and skilled stand up paddle surfer. While it is a very easy sport to “pick up” there are some important fundamentals that can be taught rather quickly. Paddle Surf Warehouse offers private lessons in Newport Beach, click here to contact us for a private or group lesson.

If you have your heart set on learning on your own please be careful. The most important thing to do is stand parallel to the rails of the board, stand tall, and make sure you keep your eyes parallel with the horizon.

Does it matter how I paddle?

Actually it does. Most people go out and use a “Big and Long” stroke which is good when you are first getting your bearings on a paddle board but the best stroke is a quick but short powerful move. The best stroke is "quick and short, and up-front", starting the stroke shallow and building into your paddle depth. Use your top hand "set to push". Do not drive the paddle with your shoulders and waist; this not only causes the board to be more unstable, but will also cause the board to compress into the water, thus making the board drag and have more resistance to planing on the surface.

Most importantly remember to finesse the stroke don’t rip into it.

What do I need to do in terms of paddle care?

  1. Keep paddles out of direct sunlight and heat, this will weaken the integrity of the paddle.
  2. Fix all chips with 5 min epoxy.
  3. NEVER lay your body on paddle when surfing, if necessary to prone-paddle through surf, place the paddle "Logo Up" with handle extending up and forward. Failure to do so will weaken the integrity of the paddle.

When I wipe out or a large wave breaks in front of me, what should I do with the paddle?

I find it is best to dive into the wave holding the very top of the paddle in one hand, as to let the blade end "weather-vane" behind you. Also, you can let it go, it floats. However, it may come back to hit you or others if you're caught in the white water.

Are there different standup paddle designs?

There are a few different paddles on the market today made from wood, aluminum, and carbon. All have different blade shapes and styles. Paddle Surf Warehouse only recommends using paddles we sell. We have partnered with the most reputable companies so that our customers don’t have to deal with sub par products.

What length paddle do I need?

Paddle length is important for technique, posture, and efficiency. If too long or short, it could cause joint and back injuries, and also not be efficient over long periods. The rule of thumb is to have a paddle "one shaka"(6-8 inches) over your height. Longer is not better and could even cause shoulder joint injury. Here is a Stand Up SUP Paddle Sizing Chart.

Do I have to have an Ocean or Bay near by to Paddle Board?

No. Stand up paddling has gained in popularity all over the world in land locked areas. Many people are starting to paddle in lakes and calm rivers.
