How to Get Started Purchasing Stand Up Paddle Boards
Paddle boarding offers an amazing full body workout and is becoming a favorite cross-training activity for all athletes. Since you're standing at your full height, you'll enjoy excellent views of everything from sea creatures to what's on the horizon. It's almost like walking on water!
Stand up paddling is a fun and easy way to go play on the water. With a minimum of equipment, you can paddle board anything from ocean surf to lakes and rivers—no waves required.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR BOARD
WIDTH & THICKNESS
These two dimensions mainly determine stability so when you choose your board consider your needs for stability. Are you a beginner, will you be using it for fishing, for surfing, your size and weight. All of these factors determine which is the board for you.
Are you going to race, cruise, surf? The longer the board the more glide, glide equals speed and covering more area with less strokes. With length and glide you lose maneuverability. If the board is going to be used for surfing and cruising, white water and flat water we recommend a board under the 10'6 range. This could be considered a middle of the road size. Enough length for good glide, still short enough to maneuver through surf and white water. If distance paddling or racing is your passion we recommend the (stock) size race board 12'6 or a 14' which is becoming the most common size in Stand Up Paddle competitive racing developing forum as new board models are introduced and ridden by the Legends team so please check back for new content.
There are many different factors in selecting your paddle board. Sizes are based on the paddler's weight and experience. More experienced and lighter paddlers can choose narrower boards. Novice paddlers should choose wider, flatter boards, which offer more stability.
Next is where will you be doing most of your stand up paddling, do you want to use it for long distance paddling or are you more interested in stand up surfing? Do you want a really stable board or would you prefer more maneuverability?
